Long Billed Vulture

Indian Vulture (Gyps indicus)

Description:

Spotted perched on a tree in Bandhavgarh National Park, India. Some 10 odd years ago, they could be easily spotted in big cities across India but disappeared mainly because of consumption of carcass of cattle treated with diclofenac (anti-inflammatory drug). Now they can only be spotted in safe havens such as National Parks.

Good news that numbers are recovering since the pesticide has been banned. You might be interested to read a couple of features we have run in the project Noah blog on vultures that talk about the conservation efforts for this species
