Shield-handed Square-headed Wasp (male)

Crabro latipes

Description:

This is one of the coolest wasps I've ever found. There are shields or extensions on the male's front legs. These appendages (epaulets) are used during mating in which the male filter's light enabling the female to recognize she is connecting with a male of her same species.

Habitat:

Spotted in my backyard on a grape leaf during the mid-day sun.
