A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Keith, I would probably trust your guts more than my eyes ;-)... Thanks for your input!
Neptis caterpillars can be very difficult to identify to species, with widespread N. hylas and Indian N. jumbah being among the most variable in appearance and choice of foodplant, while closely related Phaedyma columella larvae greatly resemble those of N. jumbah. A reliably determined host coupled with known local possibilities are important considerations, but nevertheless an accurate ID of immature Neptis usually must await the resulting adult. Having said all that, the subject cat doesn't have the look and "feel" of N. hylas, so I'm going to trust my gut and vote for N. jumbah. Neena, please let us know the outcome; thanks!
Thanks Nuwan and Bayucca. Finally it started moving around, posted more pics here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/111....
There are 3 more different caterpillars in the same plant. Will post the pics later.
Neptis jumbah so far not recorded feeding on Cassia fistula (in Sri lanka)
that makes N. hylas is my choice too :-)

Thank you very much guys!
The feeding plant is Cassia fistula. And Neptis hylas varmona is always around my home. This caterpillar is sitting in the same dry leaf for more than 3 days, stopped feeding or moving around. I will post more pics.
i can narrow it down to just two species Neptis hylas & jumbah
maybe feeding plant would be helpful to identify!

Nymphalidae, Limenitidinae, Neptini for sure. I think yours is not Phaedyma columella, since the first row of horns is too long, depending on the instar.

My guess is a Neptis sp., but the species might be tricky to determine from only the picture. Are you rearing them?? So, much easier is to feed them until pupation, taking all the time pictures!! And finally the newly emerged butterfly will probably show us its ID!!
My closest guesses are:
Neptis hylas: http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/sp/480/...
Neptis jumbah: http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/sp/1118...
Neptis nata: http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/sp/2142...
I slightly would tend to Neptis hylas.

But there are more species found in India and less infos are available for the species other than mentioned above. Not to forget all the subspecies! Personally I do not think yours is Neptis harita:

I try to get a confirmation...
