Jewel Beetle - Escarabajo

Description:

These insects are commonly known jewel beetles or metallic beetles because of its metallic shades of black, blue, green, copper, red and purple in their elytra. They are the largest of buprestidae family, reaching 5 to 8 cm in adults. Females lay up to 10 eggs reddish between December and March, and incubated for 19 days. The larvae cause significant damage to kill the host plant (genus Ceiba, Ficus, Chorisia) after drilling the stem or roots to feed.------------------------------------- Estos insectos se conocen comúnmente escarabajos joya o escarabajos metálicos, debido sus matices metálicos de color negro, azul, verde, cobre, rojo y violáceo en sus élitros. Son los más grande de la familia de los bupréstidos, alcanzando entre 5 y 8 cm en los adultos. Las hembras ponen hasta 10 huevos rojizos entre Diciembre y Marzo, incubándose durante 19 días. Las larvas causan daños importantes al matar a la planta hospedera (género Ceiba, Ficus, Chorisia) tras barrenar el tallo o las raíces para alimentarse.
