Yellow Morel

Morchella esculenta

The Morel mushroom is one of the most readily recognized of all the edible mushrooms and highly sought after as a culinary delicacy. The Morel fruits under hardwoods during a short period in the spring, depending on the weather, but it is also associated with old orchards, woods, disturbed grounds and burnt areas.

Throughout the World. Sometimes found solitary, but more often in groups, on the ground in a variety of habitats. Early spring in the U.S., in forests, orchards, yards, gardens and sometimes in recently burned areas.

Observed growing under an invasive Buckthorn tree that was being removed.

Thank you António, yes these are a delicacy here - the average cost is $50 USD per pound! I am fortunate to have these growing in my woodlands and I love this time of year when I can go out and hunt for them :)
