My local gardening book mentions that these plants have medicinal properties but are poisonous to livestock

Vinca spp are also periwinkles - trailing evergreen sub-shrubs originating in Europe and the Near East. The Madagascar Periwinkle is a native from African and Asian tropical areas widely planted and often spreading as a weed and belongs to the genus Catharanthus. The white one is variety 'Albus'. In my area (Botswana) the pink variety is by far the commonest. We also get some which have completely white flowers with no pink at the centre
[thinking about it further perhaps the pure white one is Albus and the pink centred one like your spot is an intermediate variety]
