Description:

Specific to the Ostrich fern is the brown onion-papery skin of the young still-coiled leaf shoots ("fiddleheads"). These fiddleheads are edible! Sam Thayer says up to 8" the young stalk is tender. Take no more than 15-20% of what's in the area, so you may continue to find your bounty there!
