Betula papyrifera
It is a widely distributed specie of birch. The white birch grows quickly and doesn't usually live for more than 150 years. This medium sized tree is not a champion tree. The leaves are alternate, simple, with an ovate shape, while the twigs are slender and are dull red-brown in color. The bark is a reddish brown when young and later becomes a creamy white.
Most of Alaska as well as Canada excluding some of the northwest region. In the U.S.-states bordering Canada and on the Appalachian mountains down to North Carolina. It is adapted to cold weather because it is found in places where there are long cold winters with snow and short cool summers. It also tolerates a variety in precipitation and can grow on most soils and topographic situations.
