Lygeum spartum
It is a rhizomatous perennial herb, up to a meter high, green to yellow white. Stems form thick branches at the base covered with scales. The leaves are like reed, up to 50 cm long and are rolled in, to reduce water loss by transpiration. They are stiff, hard and tough, and have uses similar to esparto grass, but of lower technical quality, in the paper industry. The flowers form a herringbone cover long silky hair surrounded by a sheath, 3 to 9 cm.
Typical of dry clay or loamy, saline soils of the Mediterranean basin.
