Dusky Arion

Arion fuscus

Description:

This is a relatively small terrestrial slug, about 6 cm in length, and mainly brown. Some darker and discreet lateral stripes are visible.

Habitat:

Found on our nets surrounding a lowland oak forest in Geneva lake valley. This particular forest is protected as an important habitat of Fire Salamanders, containing an important population of them - few years ago, about 600 of salamanders were counted there during the transect walk.

Notes:

These nets were recently installed in this place to prevent Fire Salamanders wander out of their forest and play on the road during their reproductive period. Nets will be removed in November, after the mating games are over. Beside nets, there are regular actions every night when weather is favorable to their games, aiming to collect them from nets, take measurements and pictures, count them and release them back in their forest...
