Honysuckle fruit

Lonicera caprifolium

Description:

This variety of honeysuckle produces beautiful reddish-purple flowers which turn yellow when old and die away to produce shiny black berries about 10 to 12mm in diameter.

Habitat:

Italian honeysuckle is native to Europe but is widely grown as a hedge vine. I planted this in my garden because of the beautiful fragrance. I am not quite sure what Lepidopteran is responsible for pollination.

Notes:

berries are stated to be edible in small quantities but do have side-effects. the plant is used in alternative medicine. http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?Lati...
