Scaly-breasted Munia (with nest)

Lonchura punctulata

Description:

Small sparrow-like bird with distinct scale pattern on the front. Dark rust colour on the male. The female is more pale.

Habitat:

Literally a 5 star location. Hotel Hyatt at Vidyanagar near Hampi in India. We had this shortcut via a small patch of green and on the left was the wall where a climbing plant had created a nice pattern and suitable habitat for these birds. The last photo shows the habitat. (There were about 3 males and one female). In the first photo you can see two males...both the males and the female took part in adding to the nest. I stood for a while watching these birds build (add to) their nest.I would have happily stood their the whole day but we were leaving...I hope the birds raise big broods here. It was WONDERFUL to see how the guests on their way to the pool did not even glance at these birds.
