Japanese Holly Fern

Cyrtomium falcatum

Description:

Evergreen fronds in rosettes on slender stalks. Shiny green arching leaves to 36 inches, divided into very shiny dark green, leathery, hollylike leaflets.

Habitat:

The books say they like moist, acid soil. This one has sprung up in a crack in a limestone ledge, and seems to be living there very happily. It's a protected spot in the shade of an overhang, and does receive moisture from any runoff if it rains.
