A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Equus ferus caballus
A small horse. Ponies often exhibit thicker manes, tails and overall coat, as well as proportionally shorter legs, wider barrels, heavier bone, thicker necks, and shorter heads with broader foreheads than regular horses.
Greyson Highlands State Park. High elevation, 5000 ft. Many balds and deep forest. Only 4 miles from Mt. Rogers. highest point in Virginia
The balds are inhabited by a herd of introduced ponies allowed to run wild within the confines of the park. While allowed to run wild they are accustomed to humans and rarely halt their grazing as hikers pass close by. In the fall they are rounded up for physical exams and several are usually sold to keep the heard at a manageable size.
