Pulau Tioman has two species of monitor lizard according to the "Checklist of the Herpetofauna of the Seribuat Archipelago" http://www.aseanbiodiversity.info/Abstra... , the Asian water monitor, Varanus salvator and V. nebulosus, the clouded monitor lizard. They can instantly be told apart by the position of the nostrils in V. nebulosus which lie mid-way between the eye and snout. However in this spotting the nostril is obscured. Images of the juveniles of the species more closely resemble V. nebulosus, the clouded monitor lizard. e.g. http://www.photomalaysia.com/forums/show... (4th photo).
