Picoides pubescens
Very small woodpecker, not much larger than a chickadee or nuthatch. The first photo shows the male (you can tell from the red on the back of his head), is feeding male chick. Females look the same as males, minus the red patch. White and black checkered wings, with white streak down the back.
open woodlands, particularly among deciduous trees, and brushy or weedy edges. They’re also at home in orchards, city parks, backyards and vacant lots.
I have been watching this nest / hole for over two weeks hoping to get a peek of the little ones inside (which I could hear quite well), keeping a safe distance not to disturb the parents go in and out of the nest. Today was my lucky day, and I was able to get a few glimpses of the young chicks. I believe there are three (at least one male and possibly two females), but not positive since all I have been able to see thus far is their tiny little heads poking out looking for the next meal.
