Limonium carolinianum
This plant is a relative of the statice varieties used in many flower arrangements. Its tiny purple flowers attract small flies and solitary bee and wasp species to the edge of the intertidal zone. Sea lavender can tolerate high salt levels and will grow in cracks and crevices with a minimal amount of soil.

Dave, if you were going to the Amazon with us I would give you a prize for including a scientific name. Thanks for posting!
Since this is a member of the plumbaginaceae family, I wonder if we might find a cousin in the Amazon - and where we might go looking for it - the forest floor, understory, the canopy? Adding this to my list of things to wonder about!
