Sistrurus miliarius barbouri
Anerythristic juvenile Dusky Pygmy Rattler. Lacking any red coloration typical of this species.
Found under a tree a few feet from the trail, under some pine needles and dried grass.
This specimen was very defensive, and only had two small buttons on it's tail. It would bob it's head up and down, and fired off a single warning shot. I found three Pygmy Rattlers in the same general area right off the edge of the trail. All three were juveniles and VERY well camouflaged. It's a controlled burn site so most were seeking cover under charred piles of logs and branches.

Great spotting! When I lived in Florida I rarely saw these.. And even when I did they had such good camouflage it was amazing to see!
Hi again, Brady. I'm enjoying looking at your reptile fotos. Great shots of great animals. If you find useful information, especially confirmation of the ID on the internet, it would help to the rest of us if you could put that website in the "Add a Reference" box. There is a space for Wikipedia and then another for any other site as well as one for Encyclopedia of Life. Thanks again for sharing your great spottings and a belated welcome to PN.
Amazing how hard it is to see them if they don't move isn't it? Great shots Brady. Thanks for sharing.
