Osage Orange, Horseapple, or Bois d'Arc Tree

Maclura pomifera

Description:

This is a very old specimen. Male trees have small thorns on twigs. Leaves are simple, arranged alternately, and end in a point. Bark is dark, deeply furrowed, and roots are and covered with an orange bark.

Habitat:

Bottomland hardwood forests.

Notes:

Bois d' Arc is said to come from the French describing the indians making bows and arrows from the wood.
