African Monarch

Danaus chrysippus

Description:

medium-large butterfly with striking black and white markings on an orange-brown background. The body is black with many small white spots.

Notes:

The colour pattern of the African Monarch appears to be mimicked by various other species e.g. the female Diadem butterfly. This would suggest that the african monarch is an unpalatable species and that its colour and pattern are warning colours to would-be predators
