Description:

Perennial, four foot shrub. Young branches are smooth and green with curved thorns on the branches and leafstalks. Leaves are alternate, compound, with 3 leaflets per leaf. Leaflets are triangular. Scarlet flowers in spring. 1-2 inches long, petals closed, appearing tubular but upper petal is wrapped around the lower 4.

Habitat:

Plant is in the Heritage Elementary School, Texas Our Heritage Garden, representing the ten eco regions of Texas.

Notes:

Scarlet seeds poisonous.
