Eretmochelys imbricata
The critically endangered Hawksbill Sea turtle with populations dropping dramatically. Their eggs are still being harvested and eaten in many parts of the world even though they are protected, and they are poached for their beautiful shells.

Congratulations Andrew, we've chosen this beautiful Hawksbill Sea Turtle as our Spotting of the Day for Endangered Species Day:
"Today is Endangered Species Day! Hardly a reason to celebrate, with the list of endangered species having rapidly increased over the past few years. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) compiles a comprehensive global listing of species, classifying species at risk on a spectrum that ranges from "near threatened" to "extinct," with "endangered" found in the middle. We mark the day with this critically endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) as our Spotting o the Day. Hawksbill sea turtles are found in tropical reefs around the world, and have seen their population drop dramatically due to fishing practices and being the primary source of tortoiseshell material used for decorative purposes. The species (along with the entire family Cheloniidae) is listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. It is illegal to import or export turtle products, or to kill, capture, or harass hawksbill sea turtles".

Thanks AshleyT for the nomination.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
