Pluvialis apricaria

Description:

Large and comparatively long-legged plover. In winter plumage has spangled golden upperparts and buff, well marked underparts. In breeding plumage (seldom seen in region) acquires black belly grading to grey on face and neck; markings more distinct in male than female. In flight, all birds show white 'armpits'.

Habitat:

Favours areas of short grass. Widespread but only locally common winter visitor.

Notes:

Photo resolution poor as the bird was quite far away, but the markings are fairly clear.
