Oophaga granulifera (Dendrobates granuliferus)
They are fast...Had not seen any at the waterfall last year, however this year they seem to be plentiful...very happy to see them back again!
Yes, Project Noah is an excellent platform to learn new things, as I do some hours ago, that these beautiful little frogs are now called Dendrobates again ;-)...
Thank you very much for your kind explanation.
If I don't know the name of new findings, it will be difficult to look through the dictionary. That is why "Project Noah" becomes so valuable. As you said, there are complex features in nature and I am learning a lot through this wonderful organization.
True and not true! Usually bright colors (like red and yellow) indicate: Danger and there are many clever animals which are also very colorful but completely harmless, but for the predator it means danger. First time a bird got a poisenous one it would spit out the bug or butterfly, the second time maybe as well, but the third time it has learned not to touch this kind of animal. This is called "mimicry" a very common and complex feature in nature.
These frogs in the rainforest do not have many enemies, so they can even hop around during the day. There are some snakes which feed on these poison dart frogs. All others should avoid the frogs, because they are producing some of the most dangerous toxins of all animals.
My biology teacher said to be careful with colorful creatures.
They are often poisonous (including mushroom, spiders, snakes, etc.) Is that true?
Thank you Rooms 166 and 1617...they are only an inch or so long and they look shiny because they live in a steamy, damp (wet) environment, like under leaves near waterfalls or jungle streams...
I really wonder why frogs are so many different colors! This one looks really shiny. He looks sort of weird.
