Fox Sparrow

Passerella iliaca

Description:

A sparrow with a grayish head and back, and brown to rufous tail and wings. The thick billed and slate-colored subspecies live in southern California as their winter range.The similarly colored junco species have a all slate head and even body. The more common European house sparrow is mostly brown, and has a black chin, a minimal gray cap.

Habitat:

Hills above Malibu and Oxnard. About 1000 feet above sea level.

Notes:

They were very shy and would run off into the brush when someone approached.
