Belted Kingfisher

Megaceryle alcyon

Description:

Small, very active bird with a blue back and dark blue hooded head. The long beak and crested head are dead giveaways for this little kingfisher

Habitat:

An annual visitor to our freshwater lake.

Notes:

I've wanted to photograph this species for over a year. The first one I saw was last October, perched on the little tree in the lake . . . my new camera arrived 4 hours later that day and I haven't seen it again until yesterday. So excited to finally get proof of this little guy. Even so, these were taken with my longest lens, and if I made ANY move to get closer, the chase was on. He wouldn't stay still for a good picture for over an hour, and then he lost me.
