Black Rat Snake

Pantherophis obsoletus

Description:

One of Missouri's largest snake species. This black rat snake is hanging out in some exposed tree roots about 10 feet above a stream. This individual is probably around 6 feet long. Rat snakes are nonvenomous.

Habitat:

Black rat snakes prefer rocky, wooded hillsides or sections of woods along streams and rivers (precisely where I spotted this snake).

Notes:

The cloudy, milky eyes indicate an upcoming shed.

Ashish - yes, the clouded eyes mean that it will soon be shedding its skin.
