Whitespotted Surgeonfish (api)

Acanthurus guttatus

Has 2 white bars, 1 behind the eye and 1 behind the pectoral fin. Many white spots on the rear half of the fish. Has bright yellow pelvic fins and the tail is bright yellow and black. Has a thick upper lip.

These are non-territorial surge-zone fish that ride the surf into the shallow water to feed on algae before being swept back into deeper water.

Group spawning, often involving hundreds of fish, takes place at dusk over outcroppings in channels.
