Whitespotted Surgeonfish (api)

Acanthurus guttatus

Description:

Has 2 white bars, 1 behind the eye and 1 behind the pectoral fin. Many white spots on the rear half of the fish. Has bright yellow pelvic fins and the tail is bright yellow and black. Has a thick upper lip.

Habitat:

These are non-territorial surge-zone fish that ride the surf into the shallow water to feed on algae before being swept back into deeper water.

Notes:

Group spawning, often involving hundreds of fish, takes place at dusk over outcroppings in channels.
