Rounded earth star

Geastrum saccatum

Description:

A cluster of balls with tough skin splitting open to form star shapes. The petals evert and lift the star from the mycelium below. The central capsule is exposed to disseminate spores.

Habitat:

In leaf litter under a stand of acacia.
