Areas with naturally adapted vegetation, where this one was found. They are also normally seen in anthropic environments.
ENGLISH VERSION HERE:
Their scientific name means "Cancer-Shaped Thorny-Belly", in which the word "Cancer" is used to describe the crab animal in the zodiac sign, most likely a reference to the spider's appearance. Gasteracantha cancriformis is a member of the family Araneidae, subfamily Gasteracanthinae and tribe Gasteracanthini. They weave orbicular webs to catch prey. This spider is known to possess polichromatism, which means there is a lot of color variations among individuals of this species. Up to 8 color variations of Gasteracantha cancriformis are known to me. These spiders have a short lifespan, lasting only until the end of their reproductive cycle. Once the eggs are produced, the female dies. The males die six days after a cycle of sperm induction to the female. They're distributed in the New World, and lots of color variations were recorded in Brazil.
Despite the Gasteracantha cancriformis' menacing appearance, they are not aggressive and are harmless; their venom has no medical importance. In the picture we can see a dead male and a live female of Gasteracantha cancriformis. I plan to try to document other color variations of this species.
