Limenitis archippus
The Viceroy butterfly, can be differentiated from the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) by the thin black line that crosses the hind wings. With a wingspan of 6-8 cm it is also slightly smaller than the Monarch. The striking Orange and Black pattern is one of the most recognized in the world of butterflies.
This one was seen on some plants along a trail near a marshy area in NW Iowa.
