A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Pternistis erckelii
Light brown and beige colored bird about 15 inches tall with yellow legs and feet, a black beak and a rust-colored patch at the top of its head.
Lowland mesic shrubland at the fringe of mixed native and alien lowland forest.
Spotted emerging from roadside grass near the uphill end of Palehua Road on Oahu. It was content to approach within several feet of humans while it was being ignored, but it quickly fled into the tall grass when approached.

Ava - Thanks for letting me know. Being the first is sort of surprising, as these birds are not hard to spot--though admittedly they are hard to image. Most spottings are fleeting glances. I was just lucky enough to have one provide a brief photo-op. I might have gotten a second, better image, but just then my 19-month old granddaughter decided she wanted to pet it. The bird was having none it that, and fled upon the first move in its direction.
Congratulations allen.hoof, this is the first spotting of this species on Project Noah!
