Fourspot Butterflyfish ( lauhau)

Chaetodon quadrimaculatus

Description:

2 white spots on each side of the brown upper back;yellow belly, tail, nose and fins.

Habitat:

Form long-lasting monogamous pairs and defend their territory from others of their species. Feed on polyps of Cauliflower Coral and but eat other invertebrates and algae. Because of their diet, they do not do well in aquariums.

Notes:

Moon fish? Sometimes they follow a 24 hour lunar feeding cycle, eating when the moon is in the sky whether it is day or night, resting at other times. This lunar behaviour has only been studied on the Kona Coast.
