Marine Diatom

Description:

Coscinodiscus? It was the only one like it that I observed in this sample that was packed with other diatom species. Shaped like a thick disc or a concave tablet, it was one of the largest organisms we looked at in this sample consisting mostly of phytoplanktons.

Habitat:

A marine biologist on board skimmed some plankton using really fine mesh nets and we took a drop from that sample and placed it under a microscope. The sample was skimmed in Izhut Bay just off Afognak Island in somewhat shallow water (less than 200 feet).
