Potter Wasp

Delta pyriforme

Description:

The wasp had a small spherical ball of mud between its mouthpart and antennae. It was secreting some kind of liquid secretion (maybe regurgitated water) from its mouthpart and made use of its antennae, to form a muddy secretion on the floor. This process took place for almost a minute, after which it flew away. This wasp was definitely hunting for an appropriate location for its nest.

Habitat:

This was at the front porch of a friend’s house.

Notes:

Potter wasps make their nests out of mud, and in many cases the individual nest cells resemble old style earthen pots, thus their name. Potter wasps are also known as Mason wasps.
