Ypthima baldus
Another of those dark coloured bushbrowntype butterflies I see lots of...it has prominently placed eyespots.
On a Taro leaf.
Totally pie-eyed counting spots...this is either a Himalayan Fivering or a Common Four-ring. Plus these have wet/dry forms.HELP!! Please. Ypthima it certainly is. Open to correction if the species name is incorrect. Thanks to M W-J for his encouragement.

To me the Common Five Ring has many variations but always 5 or 6 rings on the hind underwing which yours has 5. I think the Himalayan Five Ring is the same but is separated into several species from what I can see. The Four Rings only ever seem to have 4.
Certainly it is Ypthima sp. for me.
Satyrinae and probably Satyrini.
Thanks Malcolm Wilton-Jones: I had looked through the first link...(that's when I ended up cross-eyed) plus one on Bengal butterflies....but the second one is a new one for me. MANY thanks.
Heres a page which might help http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/tx/453-... or try this http://www.flutters.org/home/photogaller...
I am waiting for January when we have the Kolkata book fair...the butterfly guide is on the top of my list. Malcolm Wilton-Jones. Thanks for understanding my frustration...after a point they ALL start looking the same to me:(
I have the same problems with multiple species of butterflies all looking similar! I find searching the web using the terms "compare" or "difference" along with the common names or scientific names can sometimes bring up pages showing what differences to look for but there's nothing like a good field guide for really sorting these out. Over here amazon are selling old versions of guides or second hand but good quality guides for very cheap rates but the overseas postage rates are exhorbitant.
