Blue Blubber Jelly

Catostylus mosaicus

Description:

Just got this from my friend in Northern NSW. Apparently there are many of these blue jellyfish washed up on the beaches there at the moment. 15" long by 7" wide approx.

Habitat:

Washed up on the beach

Notes:

In the past, jelly populations were kept in check by predators like sea turtles and jelly-eating fish. Due to the reduction of their predators, jelly populations are growing at alarming rates.

thanks Daniele... I almost put it into 'Other' but am not really sure what belongs there.

Hi Pam! To answer your question in notes, jellyfish are actually not fish, and belong to the phylum Cnidaria (fish are in Chordata). Here on Project Noah we put them in the Other category. I have relocated it for you :-)
