Cancer ceratophthalmus
Believe this crab has just hatched a few days back, it was really fast on the sand. I was quite excited when it stood still for the shot :) They were spotted as a group in the shores of Covelong beach, Tamilnadu India.

Guess you're right, the sand balls would have been a dead give-away. Maybe someone else can help...
I did not find such stuff on the beach sand rather I saw them being washed off by the laps of tides on the beach side. May be they are something else? Your comments are most welcome.
Maybe Sand bubbler crab (Scopimera sp.)?
Here's mine: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/111...
Here's a BBC video about these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XJtq2d_l...
Will be looking forward to more :-) Cheers!
Thank you Satyen :) I will post some more pretty soon. Cheers!
Great first spotting! Welcome to the community, Aarthi!
Yes I was excited! They were a few here and there on the sand, I did see a few tiny holes on the sand but was not lucky to see them working. I am not really sure if they venture into the ocean ever but they can be found just washed on the shores here.
I surprised you were able to get one on your hand! Do they burrow into the sand and roll out balls of sand from their hole? I spotted some sand crabs working like that recently...
Thanks Alice :)
Nice!
