Red Stinkhorn

Phallus rubicundus

Description:

Spike-like orange fruiting body with small pockmarks. It has an olive brown slime towards the apex, which does indeed stink.

Habitat:

Growing in mulch in a suburban area.

Notes:

Phallus rubicundus is often confused with Mutinus elegans. The difference is that Mutinus elegans doesn't have a clearly separated cap as Phallus rubicundus has.
