Purple Coneflower

Echinacea angustifolia

Description:

Tap rooted perennial, 6 - 20 in. Leaves lancr-shaped. Flowers have prominent cone-shaped disk surrounded by pale to deep purple spreading rays.

Habitat:

Spotted on a dry, sunny hillside in an opening in a wooded area in north Texas.

Notes:

Plains Indians are said to have used echinacea for more medicinal purposes than any other plant group. Science confirms many traditional uses, plus cortisone-like activity, insecticidal, bactericidal, and immuno-stimulant.
