The very short muzzle on this critter makes me think it might be a cotton hispid rat. They eat flowers and do not invade human habitations. Their tails are short for a rat - about half the length of their body. Did you have a chance to see the tail?

Cant seem to change what I typed before. He was about 6 inches. Brown. Probably a gopher of some sort. Lived in a vast system of Burroughs or tunnels. Caught these guys tunneling over by the marina.

Just read up on the hispid cotton rat - apparently they don't get that far west, so I'm probably wrong on that guess. Either way, cute little face. :)
