Morning!! :) No probs Dave
The macro functions as a normal lens at all other distances. In fact, the 105 is my standard lens, as I mostly steal street portraits when I am not bugging. But I do agree, The ring will get you there.
Sorry we hijacked your spotting Viv :)

In my opinion a small extension ring is a better option, it allows you to get a slightly closer focus and still gives room for middle distance subjects. Not cheap if you want auto functions but....
Everyone dreams of a macro, I know I did. But, it is quite deflating when your first results come back and are mostly out of focus. At full macro, the depth of field is around 0.2mm, even photographing a small ant, that is only enough for half an eye, a slice of abdomen and a piece of antenna. You soon learn to shoot further back and crop.
I find a monopod a big help even when not extended and used on a smaller camera it can help to increase the stability. I like the mirror idea but it won't work for birds!
Many of my insect shots are taken with the telephoto at max zoom as I'm mostly waiting for birds but the pictures are fine for ID.
Your images are just fine with the point and shoot. Photography is a big part of my life, so I have invested in an SLR and a macro lens. I need a monopod to support the weight, especially when shooting from a difficult angle. It is bulky kit!

I don't own a monopod Dave ...... Just rely on my steady-ish hand and my little point & shot
A lot of my stuff is along side a stream or a paddy field, so no opportunity to get behind. Possibly something that clips onto the monopod.

Something else to carry .... I shall need a llama to accompany me on my walks in a mo!! I've already added a tape measure ... It would have to be a pretty long stick Dave :) ... this was zoomed, and I think cropped.
Looks like leucauge, fron the legs and those longitudinal stripes on the belly. I know it is difficult to get shots of both sides, as they usually hang in awkward places.
I just had an idea, I am going to add a mirror on a stick to my tool kit. The photo won't be brilliant, but probably enough for an ID. Thanks for the idea :)
