Column Stinkhorn

Clathrus columnatus

Description:

We smelled it before we saw it. I saw (and smelled!) many of these this winter at various locations in Florida. They have a distinctive and putrid odor, designed to attract flies and other insects to help spread the spores.

Habitat:

Grassy area on the path in Payne's Prairie Preserve State Park
