I could be that as well. I thought about it. They are quite similar. It's frustrating because these guys are so variable in coloration. I wouldn't disagree with you if you chose to ID this as H. californica. :-)

Nice moth! I think it looks most like something from Genus Hypena. Perhaps Hypena humuli, Hop Vine Moth. http://bugguide.net/node/view/38909
