Yellow-bellied Sapsucker holes

Sphyrapicus varius

Description:

These rows of holes about four to six inches apart in height are made by the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker woodpecker. This woodpecker feeds on the sap, the sap then feeds other insects, and the feeding insects beome easy food for song birds.

Notes:

They may also pick insects drawn into the sap, or from tree trunks, or catch them in flight. They also eat fruit and berries. This was sited on the Cicada Trail at Lake Lewisville Environmental Learning Area, Lewisville, TX.
