Hedgehog cactus

Pediocactus nigrispinus

Description:

Pediocactus nigrispinus is a rounded cactus that may be solitary or clump-forming with needle sharp spines. Flowering in the spring with pink flowers. This is a low altitude growing cactus in comparison to other Pediocactus.

Habitat:

Spotted in sagebrush grasslands near a rock outcrop in central Washington at the Whiskey Dick Wildlife Area.

Notes:

Pediocactus nigrispinus occurs in Eastern Washington (Chelan to Yakima Counties), Eastern Oregon and West-Central Idaho in the United States. The species is locally abundant, however the distribution is sparse. Pediocactus nigrispinus is the Pediocactus species that reaches the northernmost and westernmost distribution.
