Carpenter Bee

Xylocopa caffra

Notes:

I was attracted to the spot by a high pitched sound and spotted the hole made by the bee. Presumably the sound was it "drilling" into the wood. I also observed numerous ants around the hole. Eventually the bee reversed partially out of the hole when I photographed it.

Very interesting about the ants around the hole! What were they doing? They seem to have their heads on the bee and not as if feeding on wood sap.
