Aquarius najas
Typical representative if its gender, this strider/skater is among the largest in Europe, reaching a bit shy of 2cm in body length. It shows two very long pairs of hind-legs and a shorter front legs.
This is a common European species of water strider, and it is usually seen on moving waters. Here, however, seen on stagnating waters of a pond in a small Natural Reserve (RN Colovrex) at the outskirts of our small town; straight on the Swiss-French border. The pond in this Reserve is surrounded by mainly broad-leaved forests, with a lot of oak.
