Dayak Leaf-nosed Bat

Hipposideros dyacorum

Description:

The Dayak Leaf-nosed Bat - Hipposideros dyacorum occurs in the island of Borneo and Peninsular Malaysa.

Habitat:

This Bats are known to roosts in limestone caves, under rocks and in hollow trees in tropical rainforests.

Notes:

I was part of an expedition team doing a survey of bio-diversity of Mt. Lucia which includes a group of Bat researchers from 2 local Universities who joined the expedition to help documents species of Bats that can be found from the Mountain and also to give their students some field experience in collecting bats using mist nets and subsequently collecting data about them. All bats collected were eventually released.

No, that number is not really a record.
From their database, there are more than 30 species of bats that can be found within the Park.

They were only able to get the insect feeders and not the nectar-feeders.

And of course, the trip is fairly short over 5 days, to document more species, they will have to do more days or do it over several trips.

As for the pics, yes, the bats were being handled by the Bat team when I took the pictures. Except for one, the one outside my room, I was able to take it without holding the bat, but it was through the window glass.

14 species!! I'm amazed that there are that many bat species in one place anywhere on Earth. Is that some sort of a record?

Your camera did fine. The lighting is just right, and I like the black background for bringing the subject into sharper focus. I've tried to photograph bats a couple of times and found it to be a real challenge. I assume someone held them while you photographed them?

Thanks for your kind comments, @shebebusynow :D

The Bat team recorded, if not mistaken 14 species but I didn't get to take pics of all of them as we all have different plans/schedules and they released them when I was not around, so I didn't get to take pics of the rest. However, they did take pics of all of them, and their pics are very nice, taken with dSLR camera whereas I am using a compact camera :D

It's a challenge to get bat portraits; sounds like you had the right method. How many species did you end up finding on Mt Lucia?
