Apoid Wasp

Cerceris sp.

Description:

Tiny wasp with light face and yellow markings on legs, thorax and abdomen. Wings are mostly clear other than front edge expanding near the end. "They are notable in that the faces of the females are frequently modified with unusual projections on the clypeus and the clypeal margin; these can vary from simple conical bulges to elongated curving "horns". " - Wikipedia

Habitat:

Support stake for cactus in dry area of the backyard. Was originally on the sprinkler head nearby before relocating.

Notes:

Spotted by one of my teen nature enthusiasts. "Most Cerceris species prey on adult beetles, but some also prey on bees and wasps. At least one species, C. halone, preys exclusively on acorn weevils (Curculio nasicus)." - BugGuide
